Travel Tips

· Archaeological remains are fragile, so stay on the paths, take only photographs, and resist the temptation to touch the sculpture.

· While Angkor Wat is the most famous temple, there are many others that are well worth seeing and offer a more serene experience. Must-sees are Preah Khan and the enhanced WMF Visitors’ Center.

· Sunrise at Angkor Wat and sunset from Phnom Bakheng are great photo ops, but the huge crowds make for a less than sublime experience — ask your guide for alternatives (there are several good ones).

· Before you go, read up: Angkor and the Khmer Civilization is a good choice.

· For visitor information (including entrance passes), consult APSARA.

· The most popular times to visit are December and January, so you might consider October to March to avoid the crowds (I increasingly enjoy the summer; the afternoon rains are predictable).

· Allow at least four days to immerse yourself in the culture.

· Siem Reap is a shopper's paradise—check out the Old Market area and support local artisans working in the traditions of their ancestors.

· Accommodations at Siem Reap range from deluxe to bare-bones; there’s something for every taste and budget. As for restaurants, try Viroth’s Restaurant on Wat Bo Road.

· Remember that Angkor is a still a sacred place, so be respectful.
