Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of fieldwork does WMF support?

WMF supports all phases of architectural conservation, including planning, documentation, and restoration projects at a wide variety of sites around the world. Generally, WMF does not support new construction, reconstruction, or ongoing maintenance. WMF does not support archaeological excavation, conservation of movable objects, or sites that are privately owned.

What kind of financial support does WMF provide?
Support for projects can range from $10,000 to more than $1 million, but support typically ranges between $20,000 and $100,000.

Does WMF provide technical advice?
WMF employs technical field project staff and consultants who guide the implementation of WMF projects in cooperation with local partners.

How do I nominate a site to the World Monuments Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites?
Visit www.wmf.org/watch for information about nominating a site.    


How do I get help for an endangered site?

If you would like to request assistance for a site, you must submit a Request for Assistance (RFA). If you would like receive an RFA by mail, please call +1 646 424-9594 or write wmf@wmf.org. More information.


I submitted a Request for Assistance, what happens next?

Requests for Assistance—for sites not being nominated to the Watch list—are accepted on a rolling basis. Requests are evaluated for compatibility with WMF's mission and priorities as well as available funding sources. Projects determined eligible for funding or technical assistance through WMF programs will be notified of this within eight weeks of receipt of the completed application.

Who can nominate a site or request assistance from WMF?
Governments, preservation professionals, NGOs, and other interested organizations or individuals can nominate sites to the Watch or request assistance.

What kind of projects does the Jewish Heritage Program support?

WMF's Jewish Heritage Program identifies and develops local and international support for the protection of Jewish cultural sites, particularly in Europe and the post-Soviet-era states. It does not support projects at Jewish cemeteries or Jewish heritage sites in the United States (however qualifying sites may be nominated to the World Monuments Watch). For more on Jewish heritage conservation, WMF suggests consulting the International Survey of Jewish Monuments.

Does WMF support conservation of statues?
WMF does not support the conservation of movable objects, such as furnishings, statues or other artifacts. Occasionally, WMF supports conservation of monumental sculpture complexes that remain in situ and are integral to a larger monument or complex.
