WMF’s work at Bunce Island was supported by the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) at the U.S. Department of State, and by the U.S. Embassy in Freetown.
Located a few miles north of the port city of Freetown, Bunce Island’s fortified British trading post and ancillary buildings served as an international trade center and the stopping point for commercial ships transporting enslaved Africans to the West Indies and North America between the late 1600s and 1807. A testament to a transformative and traumatic period in local and regional history, the site's impact on the Atlantic world endures to this day.
