Until recently, the village of Roșia Montană, located in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, was threatened with near complete destruction by a cyanide-based gold mining project. Advocacy efforts, which grew from a few hundred local families to tens of thousands people, helped protect the town and its heritage.
