Destruction of Mam Rashan

When Daesh (also called ISIS) took control of parts of northern Iraq in 2014, it waged a brutal campaign of genocide against the Yazidis, an ethnic and religious minority that had long lived peacefully in the area. As part of their campaign, the group deliberately targeted Yazidi holy sites like the mountaintop shrine of Mam Rashan, which was destroyed.

Our Work

Reconstructing the Shrine

After the site was named to the Watch in 2020, WMF partnered with the Eyzidi Organization for Documentation to reconstruct this important pilgrimage site. Since 2022, Mam Rashan has returned to welcoming worshipers, serving as a powerful symbol of Yazidi resilience in the face of violence and hate.
