WMF's project to document and preserve traditional Batammariba settlements in Koutammakou is made possible with support from American Express.

In modern-day Benin and Togo, earthen constructions have a foundational place in the community of the Batammariba people, who are known as “those who are the real architects of earth.” Traditional Batammariba settlements across the cultural landscape of Koutammakou are vibrant expressions of cultural identity. Prescribed building techniques and orientation embody the complicated world view of the communities that live within these incredible structures, known as sikien.

Join us on August 25 on a journey that showcases the incredible traditional building knowledge of the Batammariba people and the unparalleled importance of ensuring its transmission from one generation to another.
