Home to part of the Jewish Diaspora for over two millennia, the Uzbek city of Bukhara is characterized by its traditional houses embellished with exceptional woodworking developed by Bukharian Jews over centuries. Outstanding living examples of vernacular architecture, the traditional Bukharian Jewish houses are located throughout the city’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993.
On June 30, journey with us to Bukhara's old Jewish mahallah, or neighborhood, to discover these enduring examples of the city's unique Jewish heritage. This tour will guide you through the historical and cultural significance of the mahallah's built fabric and introduce viewers to the relationship between traditional architecture, artistic expression, and community identity. By taking a closer look at some of the neighborhood's traditional Jewish houses, the tour will highlight the threats they continue to face today.
